It’s also notorious among tabletop enthusiasts for making some people loathe the entire medium of board games… I’ve got several posts to write on this topic, but I want to start by honouring Gene’s remarks with a ringing endorsement of his point about supporting those with trauma responses to play, and building on what that means more broadly. I’d like to thank whoever chose the GLAM Blog Club theme for this month, and highlight some of my past posts as potential inspiration for anyone thinking of writing about play and games in a libraries/GLAM context – specifically my Talking Points series, especially the second one, on the powers of play. Compromised account

The overall effect of miRNAs on L1 starvation survival is expected to be significantly stronger than that reflected by the data in Fig. These results suggest that miRNAs act in the intestine, and possibly in other tissues, to promote L1 starvation survival. However, the mechanisms that coordinate the long-term survival, overall developmental arrest, and reinitiation remain to be investigated.

However, we found that the reporter transgene with the lin-42 3′UTR was significantly repressed in wild-type worms, but derepressed in the mir-71(lf) worms (Fig. 4 H and I). In starved L1 worms, we detected only a slight increase in the mRNA level of hbl-1 in mir-71 mutants compared with that in wild type (∼10%), which may not be biologically significant. These results indicate that miR-71 plays a significant role in larval development of animals recovering from L1 diapause and likely does so by regulating the expression of components of the insulin receptor/DAF-16 pathway, as well as factors acting downstream, or in parallel to, DAF-16. If this were true, the starved mir-71(lf); daf-16(lf) double-mutant worms should show a slow growth phenotype similar to that of daf-16(lf) worms, but no specific VPC timing defect.

Unlike dauer diapause, L1 diapause is not accompanied by life cycle changes and has not been shown to require certain signaling pathways that control the formation of dauer diapause such as TGF-β signaling (daf-1, daf-7) and nuclear hormone receptor (daf-12) (2, 3). When late, first larval stage (L1) worms sense unfavorable conditions, they enter an alternative and long-lived larval stage called dauer larvae (or dauer diapause). The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans responds to starvation by entering developmental arrest at multiple stages of its life cycle (1).
The coordinated entrance into developmental arrest, long-term survival, and the reinitiation of development upon food availability are important biological processes to investigate. Different organisms have developed versatile growth arrest strategies to overcome starvation-induced metabolic and developmental problems. Food deprivation is a life-threatening challenge that animals frequently face as individuals and as species. Numerous animal species across multiple phyla enter developmental arrest for long-term survival in unfavorable environments and resume development upon stress removal. Which leads me to add to my wholehearted endorsement of Gene’s call for libraries to make allowances for people to avoid play and games. The fact that family game night might, as Gene remarked, be a source of trauma is primarily an indictment of the state of those families – but given play’s links to health and the fact that games can heal and promote bonding and caring, it seems unwise to ignore the qualities of the games they are playing. It’s easy to take this as a joke – families fight over board games, oh well, It’s Only A Game – but if you dig even slightly into this, you find that some of these experiences are genuinely traumatic, as one would expect might be necessary to give someone a lifelong aversion to an entire medium. Monopoly is… as legendary for spawning bitter family fights and for dragging on interminably even though it’s obvious who’s going to win as it is for being widely played. Furthermore, miR-71 plays a prominent role in developmental recovery from L1 diapause partly through repressing the expression of certain heterochronic genes. Here we show that compromising overall microRNA (miRNA) functions or mutating certain individual miRNAs impairs the long-term survival of nematodes during starvation-induced L1 diapause. But offering people opportunities to explore games and play in a safe, non-abusive, self-directed context like a library seems to me to matter, and for folks who are more likely than most to have social anxieties, finding those opportunities can be extremely hard. This certainly accords with the rise of therapists using games as therapy – a web search for “Dungeons & Dragons therapy” shows the recent explosion in ways in which people are finding healing in play. That means that when sales revery play are up, more people are playing this and other older, less-fun games instead of games with the advantage of more than a century’s advancements in the art and science of play, including co-operative games, social games, nomic games, and more. But from a colour management and overall interpretation viewpoint, I don’t know what to do with this image, and to be honest, I like the hues you’ve achieved in the sky.
